1. The 4-Step Legal Joker Exchange Sequence
Under official NMJL rules, players may not freely grab Jokers across the table at any moment. You must observe the strict sequence of play:
- Wait for Your Turn: You may only exchange when it is legitimately your turn—either immediately after drawing from the wall, or immediately after calling a discard to expose a meld.
- Announce Your Intent: Clearly say "Exchange" or "Exchanging 4-Bam for your Joker" before touching the other player's rack.
- Physical Substitution: Place the matching natural tile into the exposed meld, then transfer the Joker into your hand.
- Discard: Conclude your turn by discarding a tile (unless the exchanged Joker immediately completes your hand for Mahjong).
2. The Exact Match Requirement
The natural tile you provide must be the exact tile the Joker was standing in for. For example, if East exposes a Kong of Red Dragons containing three natural dragons and one Joker, only a genuine Red Dragon (Chung) may be swapped into that meld.
3. Dead Hand Joker Freeze Rule
If an opponent’s hand is declared Dead (due to incorrect tile count, illegal meld exposure, or impossible card combination), all tiles on their rack are instantly frozen. No player may exchange for any Joker residing on a dead player's rack for the remainder of that game.
