Jokers are the most powerful tiles in American Mahjong—and the source of the most frequent rule disputes at casual tables and tournaments. Understanding the exact official NMJL regulations prevents penalties and keeps your games running smoothly.
1. Where Jokers Can and Cannot Be Used
- LEGAL: Jokers may substitute for any tile in groupings of 3 or more (Pungs of 3, Kongs of 4, Quints of 5, and Sextets of 6).
- FORBIDDEN (DEAD HAND): Jokers can NEVER be used in a pair (2 tiles) or a single tile slot anywhere on the card. This includes Flower pairs, Wind singles in 2026 hands, and the entire Singles & Pairs category.
2. How Joker Redemption Works
If an opponent has exposed a meld on top of their rack containing one or more Jokers (for example, two 5-Dots and a Joker forming a Pung), you may redeem that Joker on your turn:
- You must wait until it is your regular turn to play.
- You must have the exact matching physical tile in your hand (e.g. the third natural 5-Dot).
- Draw your regular tile from the wall first (or make a legal discard call).
- Place your natural tile in front of the opponent's exposed meld, announce the swap clearly, and take the Joker into your hand.
- Proceed with your normal discard.
3. Critical Tournament Etiquette
- You cannot redeem a Joker from a Dead Hand that has already been declared dead by the table.
- You cannot redeem a Joker from a concealed rack.
- You cannot take back a discarded Joker; once a Joker is placed on the table discard floor, it is dead and cannot be called by anyone for any reason.
