1. Overview of Siamese Mahjong
Invented by tournament champion Gladys Grad, Siamese Mahjong is the official 2-player format recognized across American Mahjong clubs. Players hold 28 tiles simultaneously, building two independent hands on two separate racks side-by-side.
2. The 28 / 27-Tile Deal & Initial Rack Separation
East takes 28 tiles (14 + 14) and Non-East takes 27 tiles (14 + 13). Each participant arranges their tiles across two racks side-by-side (Rack 1 and Rack 2). Because of the generous initial deal, there is no compulsory Charleston passing phase; East discards 1 tile to begin play.
3. The Non-Cannibalization Rule
A player must never target the same suit family across both racks. Since there are only 4 natural copies of each tile in the set, building identical suit patterns guarantees self-inflicted dead hands. Assign orthogonal suits to each rack (e.g. Bams on Rack 1, Dots on Rack 2).
4. The Exposure Firewall
Tiles may be freely exchanged between racks until a player makes their first exposed meld (Pung, Kong, or Quint) on either rack. The moment a meld is exposed, both racks freeze their assignments; tiles can no longer be swapped between them.

6. Dual Mahjong Victory Settlement
When a player completes their first hand, they declare Mahjong and expose Rack 1. Play continues on Rack 2. If the same player completes Rack 2 before the opponent completes either of theirs, they achieve a prestigious Dual Mahjong bonus payout with doubled settlement values.
7. Discard Velocity & Defense in 2-Player Games
Because turns rotate rapidly between only two participants, reading opponent discards is twice as fast. Avoid throwing fresh unexposed honors after turn 8 to prevent feeding their secondary rack.
