1. Fatal Violations that Make a Hand Dead
Under official league rules, a hand is immediately declared dead upon challenge for:
- Tile Count Discrepancies: Holding fewer or more than 13 tiles (14 during your turn).
- Impossible Combinations: Exposing melds that cannot form any valid line on the current NMJL card.
- Premature Tile Exposure: Inadvertently revealing concealed tiles during a mistaken Mahjong call.
2. The Absolute Joker Freeze Rule
Once a player's hand is acknowledged as dead, their exposed rack is permanently frozen. No opponent may exchange a natural tile for any Joker on a dead rack.
3. Procedure for Calling a Dead Hand
Challenges must be polite and accurate. If an opponent verifies the violation, they stop taking turns, make no discards, and pay standard settlements when the hand concludes.
