1. The Calling Hierarchy: Mahjong Always Wins
When multiple players contest a single discarded tile, American Mahjong applies strict precedence:
- Mahjong Priority: A call for Mahjong unconditionally overrules any call for an exposure (Pung, Kong, Quint, or Sextet), regardless of who called first.
- Seat Order Ties: If two players both call for an exposure, the player sitting closest to the discarder in natural counter-clockwise rotation wins the tile.
2. The Window of Opportunity & Racking Rules
A discard remains live until the next player in rotation physically racks their drawn tile or releases their own discard. Merely touching a wall tile does not close the window; racking it does.
3. Miscalls and Retractions
A verbal call may be retracted without penalty as long as the calling player has not exposed any concealed tiles from behind their rack onto the table.
