1. The 152-Tile Architecture
A standard regulation American Mahjong set consists of exactly 152 playable tiles, organized into three distinct families: Suited Numbers (108 tiles), Honors (28 tiles), and Specials/Wilds (16 tiles). Every tournament round begins with players building four walls of 19 two-tile stacks (38 tiles per wall) to incorporate all 152 tiles.
2. Numbered Suits: Bams, Craks, and Dots (108 Tiles)
Each of the three suit families contains 36 tiles, with numbers running from 1 through 9 (4 identical copies of each number). In Bamboo (Bams), the 1-Bam is almost universally illustrated as a bird or peacock. Craks depict traditional Chinese numbering characters, while Dots represent strings of ancient round copper coins. Mastering number recognition is essential for executing Consecutive Run and Even/Odd patterns on the annual card.
3. Honor Tiles: Winds & Dragons (28 Tiles)
Honors consist of 16 Wind tiles (4 North, 4 East, 4 West, 4 South) and 12 Dragon tiles. Red Dragons (4) correspond to Craks, Green Dragons (4) correspond to Bams, and White Dragons / Soap (4) correspond to Dots. In year hands such as 2026, the White Dragon serves as the number Zero (0), making it the single most contested honor tile on the floor.
4. Wild Jokers & Flowers (16 Tiles)
American Mahjong uniquely incorporates 8 Flower tiles and 8 wild Jokers. Jokers may only be used in groupings of 3 or more (Pungs, Kongs, Quints, Sextets) and are strictly barred from pairs or single numbers. Passing a Joker during the Charleston results in an immediate dead hand penalty.

6. Blank Replacement Spares vs White Dragon (Soap)
Regulation sets frequently include 2 to 4 completely smooth, uncarved blank tiles. These are manufacturer spares designed for adhesive sticker replacement if a tile is lost. They must never be confused with White Dragon (Soap) tiles, which feature an engraved picture frame border and act as numeral zeros.
7. Table Care, Storage & Noise Reduction
Store tiles face-down in felt-lined trays away from direct sunlight to prevent discoloration. Utilizing a neoprene table mat reduces shuffling clatter and protects tile enamel from micro-fractures during heavy wall builds.
