1. The Zero-Joker Mandate
Under official NMJL rules, Jokers can NEVER be used anywhere in the Singles and Pairs section. All 14 tiles must be 100% natural tiles. If you draw a Joker, it cannot substitute for any tile; it must be discarded or kept on your rack as a dead tile.
2. 100% Concealed Play (C)
Every line in the Singles and Pairs section is marked with a (C) for Concealed. You cannot call an opponent's discard to create an exposed meld on your rack. The ONLY time you may call a discarded tile is when that single tile is the final 14th tile completing your winning Mahjong hand.
3. The 4-Pair Commitment Gate
Statistically, committing to Singles and Pairs requires holding at least 4 natural matching pairs (8 tiles) by the conclusion of the Charleston. Attempting this section with 3 or fewer pairs results in over an 85% table stall rate.
4. Tactical Pivots and Emergency Exits
If opponents discard your critical singles or if you draw multiple Jokers, execute an immediate pivot into high-probability lines such as Consecutive Runs Line 1 (11 22 333 4444) or 2468 Evens pairs.
